Genesis of the Organization
The idea of forming the organization was conceived by Mr. Tapas Kumar Sur, who has been associated with Service Civil International – India (an international peace forum) since 1980, and also served as the Administrator of IIMC (NGO) for five years.
During his work, Mr. Sur came into close contact with the people living beside the railway line in Adarshanagore, Mankundu, and observed that their hardships were not caused by economic deprivation alone. The deeper issues lay in their socio-cultural setbacks, which had become the root cause of their continued suffering.
It was not merely poverty, but a lack of self-respect, self-confidence, trust, and human values that pushed these families into a life of turmoil. Children lost their precious childhood due to inadequate parental care—partly because of financial difficulties and partly because of the community’s socio-cultural limitations. Poor sanitation and disease, illiteracy among adults, suffering of women, alcoholism, and extreme poverty together created a severely inhuman living condition. Weak moral values pushed the community towards an even darker future.
This realization inspired Mr. Sur to take up the cause of this disadvantaged and marginalized community. He envisioned transforming their lives by providing knowledge, values, skills, and hope, thereby building a path towards a better future. With this dream, Human Wave was founded—to stand beside underprivileged communities and guide them toward dignity and development. Over time, the organization extended its work to other deprived communities as well.
We gratefully remember the sincere encouragement and active support received from I.I.M.K., Belgium and our friends from the very beginning of this journey.
